Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka has revealed how Embakasi East MP Babu Owino managed to rebuild his political image after the controversial DJ Evolve shooting incident.
Speaking during a condolence visit at his Utawala home on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, Onyonka said former Prime Minister Raila Odinga once asked him to personally guide Babu Owino on how to regain public trust ahead of the 2022 elections.
According to Onyonka, Raila was worried that Babu risked losing his parliamentary seat because of public anger linked to the incident involving DJ Evolve. He was therefore sent to advise the youthful MP on how to repair his damaged image.
Onyonka explained that he told Babu Owino to take full responsibility for what happened, apologise sincerely, and reach out to DJ Evolve. He also advised him to assure DJ Evolve of continuous support for his medical and personal care.
The senator said Babu followed the advice and reached out to DJ Evolve, which helped calm public criticism and restore some trust among voters. He added that this step played a major role in Babu’s successful re-election.
Onyonka expressed pride in Babu Owino, saying that accepting responsibility and showing care for the victim demonstrated leadership and maturity in politics.
In recent remarks, Babu Owino confirmed that he has continued supporting DJ Evolve, including paying medical bills and covering his care. He said he has spent millions of shillings over time to support his treatment and recovery.
Babu also noted that DJ Evolve is now able to speak and that their communication has improved over time.
The remarks by Onyonka have sparked discussion on how accountability and personal responsibility can influence political survival and public trust in leadership.
