Do not bring tribalism to Nairobi, this is the face of our nation Kenya, Ruto declared.
The President spoke just after he stormed the city centre in what aides described as an unannounced show of force.
Crowds gathered along major streets as his convoy snaked through the Central Business District with Ruto occasionally stepping out to address residents directly.
His message was clear Nairobi belongs to all Kenyans the capital he argued must remain a symbol of national unity not a playground for ethnic mobilisation.
Political observers saw the timing as deliberate with rising tensions between the President and his Former deputy Rigathi Gachagua who recently attacked Ruto and his allies in Laikipia appeared aimed at reclaiming narrative control.
Unlike Gachagua’s tribal infused rhetoric in the Rift Valley and Mount Kenya regions Ruto chose the multi ethnic capital to draw a line.
This is the face of our nation, he repeated every Kenyan has a right here and no one will be chased away because of where they come from.
The President did not name names but those following the ongoing fallout understood the target leaders who have been fanning ethnic flames in preparation for 2027.
By standing in Nairobi a city where over forty ethnic groups live side by side Ruto positioned himself as the statesman against the divisive politician.
Reactions split quickly and allies of the President praised the move as courageous.
Critics however called it convenient noting that Ruto himself rode on a similar economic message that often carried tribal undertones during the 2022 campaign.
Still on the ground in Nairobi residents interviewed welcomed the President’s words.
We are tired of being told to go back to our villages every election cycle, said a trader along Moi Avenue.
Ruto ended the imprompt address by walking through a section of the city market shaking hands and repeating “Nairobi is Kenya, Kenya is Nairobi and no space for tribalism here.”
